What exactly is the pelvic floor? Well to attempt to try and simply describe a very complex system – it’s a group of muscles that are innervated by lumbosacral nerves. Those muscles have very specific functions when they contract and relax. What makes a “muscle” a “muscle” is the fact that it contracts, relaxes, and can stretch. However there are also muscles that involuntarily contract – which means that you would not be able to control the muscle activity.
This makes muscle groups really fun! You can control some, and some have involuntary actions that your brain & nervous system controls the others!
Understanding what the pelvic floor is helps understanding what it does. The functions of the pelvic floor can be simply listed as:
We can dive deeper into these functions through an educational series. If you can understand that there are basic functions, and that it is an important part of the human body, then that’s what matters.
Let’s all stop treating the pelvic floor like it’s the weird family member that no one talks about… Let’s talk about it! Let’s educate people on their pelvic floors and find solutions to their problems!
