One of the things I love about spring time is watching all the pretty colored leggings and shorts come out! I mean, who doesn’t love the new Lululemon, or even Target colors?
Old Navy has also dropped some really pretty patterns and new colors for the spring and summer!
So what do I mean by, “Wear the dang leggings”?
It all started one day when I was having a conversation with a client about how she only wore black pants because she has urinary incontinence when she runs or exercises… The way she said it, you could hear the sadness in her voice. She has such a bright and fun personality! She said that she would love to wear something other than black, because it is all she has been wearing for YEARS. Like over 7 years.
I realize that urinary incontinence can be embarrassing… It is a very hard problem to deal with on a daily basis. No modern day woman wants to be caught with that “peed on yourself” look. However… there is something to be said about wearing clothing that makes you feel good. It gives you confidence! It makes you feel more feminine and you know what, why should a condition you are dealing with limit your capacity to wear what you want to wear?
Urinary incontinence can be caused from many different things. It can happen with just a dribble, or it can happen with a substantial volume of urine. Everyone’s situation is different, and there is no cookie cutter fix or treatment. That is why pelvic floor physical therapists not only have their doctorate of physical therapy, but additional education on top of that spending time learning more in depth about the pelvic floor and urinary system function. We are in the perfect position to help guide our patients to the appropriate path of treatment to help alleviate urinary incontinence!
If I see a woman with what appears to be the “pee stain” or “sweat down there” look, I seriously have no judgement, and honestly I never notice it unless that person says something about it. I hope that women can give themselves more grace and understanding about dealing with this pelvic floor dysfunction. It happens, and more women are dealing with it than each of us realize. Let us not pass judgement on each other, and encourage our friends who are dealing with this to wear what they feel confident and GOOD in!! If you want to wear the big bird yellow leggings. Wear the dang leggings.
So if you struggle with urinary incontinence, and you find yourself limiting your ability to express yourself through fun clothing and fashion.
